On Monday 10th July 2017 our U11s youth team travelled to Flick football pitch in Bangkok. 9 players travelled to this 24 team tournament, with the majority of teams from the Bangkok area. When arriving at the tournament, it was clear to see the standard of tournament was very high, with teams such as OAZ, Champion, Football Addict Junior participating in the tournament. A number of teams had players playing at Thai Premier League academies such as Muangthong United and Thai Port FC.
Teams were drawn into groups of 3, with the top 2 qualifying to the round of 16. FC Planet were up against Somrak Khamsing who are also a well known team in Bangkok, run by former muay thai boxer and Thailand’s first athlete to win a gold medal at the Olympics. FC Planet went into the game with lots of energy, started straight from the off and scored an early goal to through Mixer to go 1-0. Shortly it was 2-0 Mixer again on the scoresheet and by the end of the first half, FC Planet were 4-0. The players played fantastically and took the 3 points with a 5-1 victory. The win automatically took them into the next round.
The next game was against Promsawang UK Stadium. FC Planet needed at least a draw to finish top of the group. The went 1-0 up, and with about 5 minutes left in the game, the opposition equalised, though FC Planet stayed organised and saw out the game to finish top of the group and into the round of 16.
The next game was against Anusorn FC, who were also an organised team with a very good goalkeeper. FC Planet didn’t start the game well and looked a little nervous, though as the game went on they managed to find their stride. In the second half they managed to take the lead through a well worked free-kick, where King laid it off to Nemass to finish from distance. Shortly after, Jaime sealed the win with a tidy finish.
The players were now through to the last 8, against Champion FC a well known amateur team in Bangkok and across the country. The players went into the game with no fear. Both teams had chances to score in the first half, but neither side failed to capitalize on the openings they created. In the second half it was Champion who started the better and managed to find the opening goal to take an 1-0 lead. But moments later, Mixer whipped in a powerful corner towards the front post and found its way into the back of the net through after a touch from a defending player. With about 5 minutes left in the game, Champion FC regained the lead by also scoring from a corner to go 2-1. Credit to the boys as they did not give up and managed to find a deserved equaliser before the final whistle, sending the game into penalties.Unfortunately it wasn’t to be as FC Planet lost on penalties to Champion FC, who progressed into the semi-finals.
All the players should be proud of their performances and the team spirit showed across the tournament. We will continue to improve with hard work and dedication, so back to the training ground to get us ready for the next time!!
